Staff mobility

A staff mobility activity is a great way to pick up new ideas and practices, develop skills in your field, and build and develop international relationships.

Erasmus+ re-association

We welcome the news that the UK will rejoin the Erasmus+ programme from 2027, having left the scheme in 2020 as part of the post-Brexit deal with the European Union.

The Study and Work Away Service is currently working to secure access to the programme for University of Edinburgh students and staff during the 2027/28 academic year and possibly beyond.

At present, the agreement only covers the current Erasmus+ programme (2021–2027) – the UK's participation in the next iteration of the Erasmus+ programme (2028–2034) will be dependent on subsequent negotiations between the UK government and European Commission.

UK institutions currently have no access to Erasmus+ funding to support staff training and development opportunities abroad. For the 2025/26 and 2026/27 academic years, funding to support outbound staff mobility activities should instead be sought from your College/ School/ Professional Service budget.

You can find information on all aspects of travelling abroad for work purposes on the University's business travel pages:
