Scholarships for Study in Japan: JASSO

Students going on exchange to Japan may be eligible for JASSO scholarship funding. Any students who are in receipt of JASSO scholarship funding will not receive Turing funding (i.e., no "double-funding").

About JASSO Scholarships

JASSO scholarships are available for students who require financial assistance to support their Japanese exchange. The funding is intended to help cover travel and subsistence costs.

JASSO scholarship funding is administered and paid by the Japanese host university, rather than the University of Edinburgh.

If you have been allocated a place at a Japanese partner university, your host institution will provide information on scholarship opportunities available to you, including how to apply, how much funding is available, and when it may be paid. Scholarship applications are typically submitted at the same time as the application to the host institution.

Please bear in mind that there is no guarantee that you will receive JASSO or any other Japanese scholarship funding.

JASSO scholarship recipients cannot receive Turing funding

UoE students who are awarded the JASSO scholarship will NOT receive Turing funding.

JASSO requirements prohibit "double-funding": Students who are receiving any other scholarship that amounts to more than 80,000 yen per month during their study period in Japan are not eligible for JASSO.

JASSO Scholarship eligibility

Scholarship details are subject to change from year to year.

The number of JASSO scholarship slots is limited, and JASSO has the final right to decide the recipients. At the time of this web page's publication, the following groups are not eligible for JASSO funding:

  • Previous awardees: Students who have studied in Japan previously while receiving a scholarship provided by JASSO.
  • Low marks: Students with a GPA below 2.3 on JASSO’s 3.0 scale.
  • Japanese citizens: Students with Japanese citizenship, including those with dual citizenship.
  • Japanese visa holders: Students with a Japanese visa other than the student visa.
  • Incomplete application/missing transcripts: Students who cannot submit an official transcript with all required information.

JASSO scholarship results will be sent to students by host institutions.
