Funding for 2025/26 and 2026/27 students

The University currently participates in the Turing Scheme, the UK Government’s national mobility scheme supporting students working or studying overseas.

Turing Scheme

As funding is limited, financial support is currently only available to:

  • students undertaking mandatory* work or study abroad as an integral requirement of their undergraduate degree (for 2025/26 and 2026/27 students), and
  • students participating in optional exchanges or placements who also meet the Widening Participation criteria outlined on the Turing Scheme webpage linked below (for 2025/26 students only).

We therefore strongly encourage students who are not eligible for Turing Scheme funding to plan carefully and consider how they will cover the associated costs of their placement abroad.

*Mandatory exchanges or placements are defined as credit-bearing international study or work opportunities that are built into the degree programme and for which no UK-based alternative exists (for example single or joint honours in Languages, International Business, Global Law, Law with a Language, or Physics with a Year Abroad).

Due to the reduction in overall funding available through the Turing Scheme, there is currently no offer of funding for postgraduate activity abroad.

Erasmus+

We welcome the news that the UK will rejoin the Erasmus+ programme from 2027, having left the scheme in 2020 as part of the post-Brexit deal with the European Union.

The Study and Work Away Service is currently working to secure access to the programme for University of Edinburgh students and staff during the 2027/28 academic year and possibly beyond. Erasmus+ funding will unfortunately not be available to students or staff from UK institutions during the 2025/26 or 2026/27 academic years.

At present, the agreement only covers the current Erasmus+ programme (2021–2027) – the UK's participation in the next iteration of the Erasmus+ programme (2028–2034) will be dependent on subsequent negotiations between the UK government and European Commission.

Students going on exchange to Switzerland may be eligible for funding via the Swiss European Mobility Programme (SEMP).

Students going on exchange to Japan may be eligible for JASSO scholarship funding. Any students who are in receipt of JASSO scholarship funding will not receive Turing funding (i.e., no "double-funding").
