How does Una Europa work to advance research and innovation in higher education? Led by the University of Edinburgh, the Una.Resin Project is building and strengthening a common ecosystem of research and innovation. Selected for funding under the EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme, Edinburgh received over €400,000 in exclusive funding. Image Research collaboration Una Europa institutions deliver cutting-edge research through collaboration, sharing world-class research infrastructure and resources, expertise, and empowering human capital development. Examples: Una Europa Research Infrastructure Cluster has developed a 'Shared Research Facilities’ Hub for the CMVM that provides a one-stop shop for researchers to explore core facilities, shared equipment, and share expertise Research capacity building for cross-sectoral match-making (e.g. Horizon Europe Pillar II call match-making) aimed at solving grand challenges Developing programmes to enhance the career development of research infrastructure managers Promoting internationalisation through support for professional staff, e.g. participation in co-creation workshops and job-shadowing. Shared Research Facilities Image It is unthinkable that we would do R&I without mobility of our staff and students, collaborative projects, and deep partnerships and interactions with universities, governments, NGOs, businesses and civil society across our partner countries. Professor Christina Boswell, VP Research and Enterprise Research and Innovation plenary session hosted by Edinburgh Key focus areas for Edinburgh researchers One Health Cultural Heritage Data Science and Artificial Intelligence High-impact collaborations are being explored in the area of health data, with Edinburgh's Advanced Care Research Centre involved in this collaboration. Edinburgh plays a crucial role in developing formats to share existing data infrastructures between Una Europa partners. Similarly, we are exploring paths to widen access to existing data infrastructures for citizens and non-academic partners. Una.Resin Image The goal of Una.Resin is to a create a seamless research and innovation infrastructure across the eight partner universities. (...) Collectively we can deliver research that can challenge intellectual frontiers, shape disciplines and have an impact. James Smith, Vice Principal International Una Europa Seed Funding The Una Europa seed funding initiative aims to spark and support bottom-up long-term collaborative activities between partner universities, to “plant a seed” that will attract external funding. The University of Edinburgh has been a partner in over 70% of the 23 projects successfully awarded funding since 2019. Some of the funded projects include: Before Geology: Reclaiming the Cultural Heritage of Europe's Underground Landscape Virtual Slaughterhouse Simulators WASTE-TO-ENERGY PLANTS AS CARBON SINK- Exploring the feasibility of CO2 capture applied to waste combustion Una Europa Seed-funded Projects Image Una Europa was the key catalyst for our project, and its development because having that trusted platform and point of reference sped up the process, gave us an industry structure and provided financial support. With our ongoing relationship in partner universities, we hosted workshops and offered additional funding.” Alessandro Seguino, Senior Lecturer, Vet MedicineSeed funded project lead This article was published on 2024-06-24
