Case stories to help mentors and other staff working with African international students reflect on their practice. These stories, written by MCF scholars at the University of Edinburgh and the University of British Columbia, arise from the scholars’ own experiences and capture some of the key issues that they have faced as international students. These case stories don’t necessarily have a wrong or right answer when it comes to the appropriate course of action one would follow as a mentor. Instead, they require negotiation of different points of view as the reader engages with these stories and the dilemmas that are presented in them. Below are some questions that you can use as you reflect on the case stories: How much did you know about the subject of this story before you read it? Have you encountered a similar incident in the past? What process did you go through to decide the best course of action ? How did these stories make you feel? What parts of them did you like? Dislike? Why? What have you learned about yourself as you were reflecting on these stories? Have any of your ideas changed?
