The University held its North America City Regions event in New York, aiming to strengthen partnerships while discussing the future of education. The third City Region event aimed to strengthen existing partnerships in North America as well as establish new connections. Held over two days the event brought together staff from the University along with business leaders and alumni, and invited them to explore the impact that digital advances could have on the future of education, innovation and industry. At the keynote interactive session - The Global Change Forum - attendees discussed how universities can remain at the forefront of thinking, teaching and innovation within a digital age. Karen Gregory, a lecturer in Digital Sociology at Edinburgh said: What we are doing is facilitating a unique conversation, where people throughout the University get the chance to imagine what a university can be. There was also a chance for University staff to meet with members of GlobalScot, a network of entrepreneurs and business leaders who help to support and grow Scottish companies overseas. This meeting led to discussions about future collaborations between the GlobalScot community and the University, including Edinburgh Innovations and the Edinburgh Futures Institute. We are hoping to cement some relationships we already have, to create some new relationships and hopefully get colleagues to come to Edinburgh to see what we have to offer as a University. The University also held an event for alumni and friends, based in the New York area, which allowed attendees to learn more about the Edinburgh Futures Institute while having the chance to catch up with old friends. About the City Regions The City Regions events are a planned calendar of external engagement across key global cities and regions. This initiative aims to build collaboration, strengthen connections with partners, alumni and supporters, and to raise the profile of the University as a leading innovator and influencer. Planned events are often held in regions and cities where the University already has a Regional Centre but seeks to broaden and deepen its influence. In 2018 events were held in Brussels and Singapore in addition to this event in NYC. In 2019, events will be held in Shanghai, Brussels and London.
