On 9 May, we celebrated Europe Day. We reflected on the innovative community of European partnerships that we have built over the year, based on complementary strengths in research and student exchange. In a post-Brexit era, we remain committed as ever to European collaborations and continue to play a strong role in European teaching, research and innovation partnerships. We take a look at some of our European collaborations and activity which is currently taking place. Una Europa: The University of the Future We continue to be a proud UK member of Una Europa, a group of eight leading European research universities committed to long-term cooperation and integration between members. Our Una Europa partners are: Freie Universität Berlin, Alma mater Studiorum Università di Bologna, Helsingin yliopisto, Uniwersytet Jagielloński w Krakowie, KU Leuven, Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne. The latest project to launch within the alliance is Una Resin. This is a 3-year project, led by The University of Edinburgh, designed to advance collaboration in research and innovation. Under the European Commission’s programme Horizon 2020, Una Resin has been allocated €2 million funding to develop new strategies, integrations and transformations in research and innovation within the Una Europa alliance and beyond. The project mutually enhances Una Europa’s ‘European Universities’ pilot project, 1Europe, which is similarly taking steps to build an eco-system by testing joint programmes and innovative mobility formats. Find out more about the Una Europa alliance Una Europa seed funding opportunity Una Europa runs an annual seed funding scheme. The initiative supports the initiation of long-term collaborative activities between the Una Europa partner universities. Activities could include organising joint workshops or seminars and preparing joint formats for education or research. The scheme is open to all academic disciplines and the project must be coordinated by senior academic or non-academic staff from one Una Europa university and involve senior staff from at least an additional three Una Europa universities. The 2021 Call is now open, and the deadline for applying is 19 July 2021, 17:00 CET. Read about the criteria for eligibility and apply now before the deadline. Una Europa seed funding Una Futura This summer, Una Europa is offering students a unique experience, tackling real-life challenges in cross-European teams. From 5-9 July 2021, Una.Futura will bring together groups of approximately five students at undergraduate, master and/or PhD level from all Una Europa partner universities – including The University of Edinburgh. Teaming up with facilitators and experts, students will work on jointly finding solutions to six key challenges of a digital future: Digital empowerment Digital citizenship Digital economy Augmented human Cyber threats Mental well-being and social relations in the digital world? Find out more about Una Futura and how students can apply Una Europa strategy 2030 – your chance to contribute Una Europa have launched an online interactive co-design process to define Una Europa's vision and purpose for the next ten years. Whether you are a student, an academic or professional staff member - Una Europa 2030 is your opportunity to get involved and shape the future of the alliance. A digital platform has been set up where participants can share their ideas and discuss with colleagues from across the whole Una Europa community. Find out more about the Una Europa strategy 2030 and get involved Our network of European strategic partners Amongst our many European collaborations across research, we have developed a series of deeper bilateral partnerships to support our continued engagement across the continent. We remain committed to playing a strong role in European teaching, research and innovation collaborations. Research metric-based analysis was undertaken with the aim of identifying and building strategic European partnerships in the post-Brexit era. Emphasis was placed on institutions with whom there was already much high-quality research collaboration, plentiful student exchanges, and a distinct potential for increased engagement.
