The University of Edinburgh, in partnership with the Tanzania High Commission London, proudly hosted 'Africa Research Day' in October 2024. This event marked the 60th anniversary of the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar and honoured the legacy of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, a distinguished Edinburgh alum.

Advancing Higher Education in Africa

The theme, ‘Higher Education in Africa: Julius Nyerere and the Continental Vision of Transformative Learning for the 21st Century’, aligned with the African Union's vision. His Excellency, Mbelwa Kairuki, was a guest of honour, delivering a thought-provoking keynote speech.

He highlighted that “Focused, well-rounded higher education remains an essential tool for Africa if we are to be at the forefront and lead this Century. A concerted continent-wide effort to build resilient education systems that provide increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa is urgently needed.”
