After you apply

Information on what happens after you submit your Global Talent visa application.

How long does it take to get a decision?

Once you have submitted your online application, proved your identity and provided your documents, you’ll usually get a decision within 3 weeks, if applying from outside the UK or 8 weeks if applying from inside the UK.

However, visa processing times are not guaranteed and can be subject to change, please check visa processing time and ensure you apply in plenty of time.

Check visa processing times on the UKVI website

Receiving your visa and what to do next

If your application has been successful, how you receive your visa will depend on where you applied and how you provided your biometric information.

Applying outside the UK

You’ll receive a vignette (sticker) in your passport valid for 30 or 90 days. You must then collect a biometric residence card (BRP) after arriving in the UK.

  • You should collect your BRP before the vignette sticker in your travel document expires or within 10 days of arriving in the UK, whichever is later.
  • Your decision letter will confirm where you should collect this, eg. A local Post Office.

  • It is very important that you act urgently if any details on your BRP card are incorrect.

You'll receive a digital status which allows you to view your immigration status information online.

View your digital status

To view and/or to prove your immigration status, you will need details of your passport (ID document) that you used to apply for your Global Talent visa, your date of birth and the mobile number/email address that you used when you applied for your visa.

You will be given a ‘share code’ that HR colleagues will need to check your immigration status.

Applying inside the UK

You'll receive a biometric residence permit (BRP).

  • Your BRP will usually arrive within 10 working days of getting your ‘decision letter’ from the Home Office saying that you can remain in the UK.
  • You’ll get an email or text from the delivery company TNT telling you when your BRP will arrive and how to change the delivery time and date.
  • Someone aged 18 or over must be at the delivery address to receive your BRP. They’ll need proof of their identity - for example, a driving licence, passport or national identity card.
  • If your BRP card has not arrived within 10 working days, please check for further information on the UKVI website.

Travelling to the UK

Your visa (vignette or digital status) will have a start and end date (valid from/valid to). It is very important that you travel to the UK on or after the start date.

If you travel to the UK before the start date on your visa then you will be entering the UK as a visitor and will not have permission to work in the UK.

If you have been granted a vignette which is valid for 30 or 90 days, then you must enter the UK during this period otherwise you will have to apply, and pay, for a replacement vignette.

The UKVI also advises that you should not book travel to the UK until you have your visa.

Arriving at the border

Global Talent visa holders and their dependants will usually have their passports and vignettes checked by immigration officials when arriving in the UK.  Certain nationalities will receive an ink stamp on their passport which confirms their date of entry.

If you have a biometric passport and are a national of an EU country, Australia, Canada, Iceland, Japan, Liechtenstein, New Zealand, Norway, Singapore, South Korea, Switzerland or the USA, you will be able to enter the UK using an eGate.  If you are travelling with children under 12 years old, you will not be able to use the eGates.

If you enter the UK through an eGate, you will not speak with an immigration official and your passport won’t be stamped.  It is important that you keep additional evidence of your entry to the UK, for example, a flight ticket or boarding pass.
