Course description

The Global Health Challenges Certificate programme is offered as an online learning, 60-credit Postgraduate Certificate, comprising the following courses:

Compulsory Courses (40 credits)

Global Health Challenges (20 credits)

September - December

Health and wellbeing are strongly affected by the shifting global burdens of diseases such as non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, including HIV/AIDS, and injuries. Exacerbating these are often conflict and natural disasters. Social factors influenced by socioeconomic, cultural and environmental conditions are also strong contributors to and determinants of health and wellbeing.

Key themes include innovations through health service delivery, community-based approaches and planetary health.

You will develop your understanding of major global health challenges, the factors that drive them, and the complexities of health policy to tackle them.

Evaluation of Global Health & Development Programmes (20 credits)

January - March

Across the globe, many programmes and interventions exist to improve health, wellbeing and conditions of individuals and communities. But how do we know if these programmes are working? Should we continue to fund them if they are not effective, and even if they are effective, how can they be improved and made more efficient?

Furthermore, how do leaders, organisations or communities make decisions about the best interventions, out of a range of promising programmes, for their contexts? In resource constrained environments, this is even more important.

This course explores what evaluation is, when it can be used and the range of evaluations and methods. It aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to design an evaluation of a public health or development programme taking into account specific contexts. Case studies will be used to illustrate concepts.

The course would particularly benefit health and development programme managers, researchers and practitioners. This would include staff from ministries of health or development, non-governmental organisations and academic institutions.

A multidisciplinary approach

Local and global health challenges are intricately connected and our understanding of health and wellness, illness and health care are changing rapidly as the world changes. What we do as individuals, as communities, as nations and as multi-national agencies has a major impact on both the global health agenda and the day to day health in every country.

Our programme looks at how multiple and increasingly diverse factors determine health and wellness across low, middle and high income countries. It investigates proposals to tackle the global health challenges and investigates ways in which local communities across the globe have sought to manage changes and turn around problems. It taps into the emerging field of Planetary Health which focuses on the human health impacts of accelerating environmental change, and explores its key themes: urgency, inequality, bias.
