Before starting your scholarship application, you must read through the information on this checklist so you understand how the scholarship works.

About the checklist

The checklist will help you navigate the scholarship's eligibility criteria, understand which degree courses you can study with the scholarship and explain how the funding works. 

 

You must understand all our terms and conditions before you apply.

To be eligible to apply for the scholarship, you must meet the following four criteria:

 

  1. Immigration status 

You must have one of the following statuses to apply.

Asylum Seekera person who has made a claim within the UK for refugee status (this includes submission of a fresh claim and in the appeals process)
Refugee Statusa person granted protection, and meets the criteria of a refugee set out in Article 1 of the 1951 Refugee Convention
Humanitarian Protectiona person granted protection who does not fit the criteria of a refugee within Article 1 of the 1951 Refugee Convention
Limited leave to remain on grounds of seeking protectiona person seeking protection, for example, trafficked persons and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children who have reached majority age
Indefinite leave to remain issued within the last 12 monthsIndefinite leave to remain must have been granted under one of the above categories
Leave under a Resettlement scheme

a person with Leave under:

  • UK Resettlement Scheme (UKRS)
  • Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme
  • Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP)
  • Syrian Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme (VPRS)
  • Ukraine Sponsorship Scheme (Homes for Ukraine)
  • Ukraine Family Scheme
Dependant of any of the above status groupsa person with ‘in line’ or ‘dependent’ status

2. Level of education 

You must meet the academic entry requirements for your chosen degree programme. We will not accept applications from people educated to PhD level. 

3. Diversity & Equity 

Diversity and equity are central to the success of this programme; therefore, we will work to ensure a balanced programme with a diverse mix of genders and nationalities. 

4. You must be a UK resident 

Applicants must reside in the UK at the time of their application and be prepared to relocate to Edinburgh (or a commutable distance from Edinburgh) if their application is successful. 

We define a commutable distance as:

  • being within a 60-mile radius of the University of Edinburgh 
  • you can travel to the University by car, bus or train to attend your classes. 

You must apply to the University of Edinburgh for your chosen postgraduate programme. To qualify for the scholarship, you can only apply to courses that are:

  • Postgraduate/ masters level of study
  • 1-year in duration
  • Taught in-person, on campus 

You do not have to apply for admission to your chosen degree course before you apply for the scholarship, but we recommend you do.


The scholarship funds part or full UK home tuition fees, depending on your status and circumstances, plus a stipend which is in line with the UKRI minimum level. 

To qualify for the scholarship, you must apply for and receive all available UK government student financial support, typically provided as a student loan.The scholarship funding will cover all remaining costs to fund your studies and living costs.
