The Darwin Trust of Edinburgh promotes education and research in the Natural Sciences and in particular Molecular Biology. Its main activity is the award of PhD studentships to individuals who are not UK nationals so that they can pursue a PhD in the biological or biomedical sciences.

The Wellcome Trust 4-yearPhD programme in Hosts, Pathogens and Global Health provides broad, interdisciplinary training in all aspects of infectious disease research, from immunology to epidemiology, phylogenetics and evolutionary biology.

Edinburgh Infectious Diseases is working with Fleming Fund fellows from Uganda, Malawi and Kenya to build capacity for surveillance of AMR.

The Fleming Fund is a UK Government Aid Programme and is administered by the Department of Health and Social Care. The programme aims to improve AMR surveillance, raise public awareness and promote responsible use of antibiotics in LMICs.

A multi-year commitment to explore innovative educational opportunities for African students and build research partnerships across the African continent has been announced by the University of Edinburgh. During a trip to Ghana in March 2023,  Professor Peter Mathieson, Principal announced the University's commitment to exploring innovative educational opportunities for African students and building research partnerships across the African continent.

The Principal’s African Partnership Fund will initially commit a quarter of a million pounds to build collaborations, potentially supporting research, innovation, teaching and learning and engagement with African colleagues.

The Principal’s Edinburgh-Africa Partnership Fund for 2023/24 projects is now closed.
