Edinburgh alum, Lorna MacFarlane, who studied Legal Anthropology in German at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, remembers the kindness of one of her professors. Image Study abroad experience Destination: Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich Year: 2010-11 Why did you choose your destination? I grew up in a town of around 14,000 people in Fife and loved the small-town feel of Edinburgh, but wanted to experience 'big city' life at some point and jumped at the chance to study in Munich. A mishap with a silver lining! I remember forgetting to take my German-English dictionary to one of my final exams. Unfortunately it wasn't my best mark but actually managing to pass an exam in German unaided was a huge boost to my confidence - a mishap with a silver lining! I've kept up my German in the years since the exchange and am so grateful for the chance to live and study immersed in a foreign culture and language. The kindness of a professor I remember the kindness of one of my professors. I studied Legal Anthropology in German and he would check in with me and and an Irish Erasmus student (the only other non-native speaker) after each class to make sure we had understood his lectures and to see if we had any questions. We talked a lot about Scottish legal culture and it meant a lot to me that he wore a tartan tie gifted to him by a Scottish academic at one of our last lectures. I hadn't studied anthropology at all before and this changed the way I thought about law and legal research. What would you say to a student considering work or study abroad? It's an incredibly enriching experience - there will definitely be highs and lows, but you won't regret it.
