Donghua University

The Joint Institute centres around two programmes: fashion innovation and interior design.

Shanghai International College of Fashion and Innovation (SCF) was created in 2014 as the Joint Institute between Edinburgh College of Art and Donghua University, Shanghai.

Students and graduates from SCF are ideally positioned to benefit from both the creative approaches pioneered in the UK art and design HE sector, and the traditions of production and design prioritised in China.

These values were recognised in 2020 when, in collaboration with Donghua Edinburgh Centre for Creative Industries, SCF won the China Britain Business Award for teaching innovation with the judging panel commenting on the novel approach to cross-cultural education, offering students in both countries the opportunity to engage and expand their own creative visions.

Research projects

Successful research projects hosted by SCF include the ‘Shanghai Histories project’ with participation from colleagues at SCF, ECA and London College of Fashion.

This project culminated in Styling Shanghai (eds Christopher Breward and Juliette MacDonald) published by Bloomsbury in 2020 and ‘CARE: Sustainable Fashion’ a collaborative project between researchers and students at SCF, ECA, Amsterdam Fashion Institute and Lasalle, Singapore.

Discussions are in progress to establish a Research Centre at SCF to further collaboration and exploration within the creative industries in Shanghai and the Yangtze Delta region.

Future of our partnership

In the 2022/23 academic year there are currently 259 students studying on the two programmes and Donghua have indicated that they would like to increase recruitment in coming years.

There are seven members of staff from ECA who work in SCF, 6 of them are teaching members of staff, 1 is of professional service.
