Centre for the Study of Islam in the Contemporary World

Promoting a better understanding of contemporary Islam and the Muslim world

The Alwaleed Centre is an interdisciplinary research, teaching and outreach centre based at the University of Edinburgh.

It aims to establish international partnerships with institutions across the Muslim and non-Muslim worlds to foster collaborative research and to advance mutual understanding and cross-cultural dialogue between the Islamic and Western worlds.

Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies (IMES)

Established in 1980, this department is the centre for language teaching of Arabic, Turkish and Persian and research in Islamic and Middle Eastern studies.

Arabic has been taught at the University of Edinburgh since the middle of the 18th century, and continuously since 1880.

The University holds over 23,000 resources in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies. 

Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies is recognised internationally as a leading institution for research on the Middle East and the wider Islamic world.
